NEW J VINEYARDS WINE RELEASES SHOWCASE RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

HEALDSBURG, SONOMA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (April 2, 2010)
It has become a Wine Country cliché that “great wine begins in the vineyard.” The reason that statement is so often used by winemakers is because it is true.

Throughout California, there are only a few locations where the artistic craft of winemaking, combined with modern viticultural techniques, can be matched successfully to the soil and the surrounding environment. Wines of exceptional distinction are created when all these elements coalesce perfectly. Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley is one of those special places, and J Vineyards & Winery is one of those unique wine producers.

Today, J Vineyards & Winery announces its new collection of terroir-driven Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris wines in a modern, elegant new package. With the release of these wines, J Vineyards underscores its legacy as a top Sonoma County Russian River Valley wine producer.

For nearly a quarter of a century, J Vineyards & Winery has been making distinctive luxury sparkling wines from its estate vineyards and with grapes from top growers throughout the Russian River Valley. The winery itself owns more than 250 acres of cool-climate estate grapes, planted on a myriad of rootstocks and clones, and all located along the loam and gravel benches and hillsides of the Russian River appellation.

J’s varietal estate wines are clearly the future of the winery as expressed by Judy Jordan, Founder and President. “We will continue to produce high-quality sparkling wines in relatively small quantities,” says Jordan. “With our new Russian River Valley estate varietal wines, we can push the winemaking envelope while building on our loyal consumer base,” she added.

The new packaging is designed to distinguish J’s varietal wines from its sparkling wines. Though modern viticultural techniques and winemaking practices can be a great influence on what Mother Nature provides, it is still the soil, water, and air that are the prime ingredients in the art of terroir.

Sandy Gluck of Martha Stewart Radio Hits Up J Vineyards & Winery!

Sandy hits up a vineyard!

By Sandy Gluck
March 9, 2010

I had a really informative tasting at J Vineyards in the Russian River Valley yesterday. Their pinot noirs and Russian River Valley wines were recently named as some of the top restaurant wines by Wine and Spirits magazine. George Rose, public relations director gave us a mini tour of the winery. We got to see machines for both the riddling and disgorging process of sparkling wines. Sparkling wine makes up 20% of the wine produced. We tasted 5 wines — a pinot gris, 2 pinot noirs, and 2 sparkling wines paired with an assortment of cheese and meat. Check out my photos from the wine tasting!

George Bursick, vice president of winemaking, shared his extensive knowledge. For instance, pinot noir grapes have only one pigment – red so if you’re looking at a pinot noir and it has a deep purple hue, it’s been blended with another grape. Who knew? It can also get bitter as the juice sits on the seeds so the sooner they’re removed, the better.

But taste, now that’s something that each person experiences in a different way. Lisa Mantineo, AKA Monty (producer of Everyday Food), and Ralph Stieber, my husband, both preferred the 2007 J Vineyards Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, a blend, while my favorite was the 2007 J Vineyards Pinot Noir, Nicole’s Vineyard. We agreed on the pinot gris, soft and lovely, perfect with the La Tur and Manchego cheeses.

On to the sparklings. Brut Rose was fresh tasting and slightly sweet while the 2000 J Vintage Brut, was crisp and luscious. And our hosts, thanks to George Bursick, George Rose, and Genny (who poured). And if they weren’t gracious enough, they even provided (in concert with mother nature), a double rainbow for our ride home!

J VINEYARDS & WINERY CERTIFIED AS A “GREEN WINERY” BY THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA GREEN BUSINESS PROGRAM

J VINEYARDS & WINERY CERTIFIED AS A “GREEN WINERY” BY THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA GREEN BUSINESS PROGRAM

WINERY ALSO ACHIEVES CARBON NEUTRALITY IN ENERGY USE

HEALDSBURG, CALIFORNIA — (February 15, 2010) — J Vineyards & Winery, the privately-owned and independently-operated Sonoma County sparkling and varietal wine producer, has been certified as a “Green Winery” by the San Francisco Bay Area Green Business Program.

The winery was awarded its certification and applauded for its environmental efforts at an official ceremony with the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on February 2. Last month PG&E certified that the winery made its energy use “carbon neutral.”

Founded in 1986 by Judy Jordan, J Vineyards & Winery has been producing widely-acclaimed sparkling wines from its estates and growers in the Russian River Valley. The winery recently expanded its terroir-driven estate varietal wine program to include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

“We implemented these environmental practices in a continued effort to be better stewards of the land and to respond to our consumers’ demands for environmental responsibility,” said Founder and President Judy Jordan. “Reducing, reusing and recycling is not just a slogan to make us feel better, these efforts are the keys to a more sustainable future.”

The San Francisco Bay Area Green Business Program is a partnership of government agencies and utilities created to help local businesses meet higher environmental standards and comply with environmental regulations. This process encourages businesses to conserve resources, prevent pollution, minimize waste, and reduce their carbon footprint. For more information, go to www.greenbiz.ca.gov.

KCBS Radio: Narsai David's review of J Vineyards Pinot Gris and J Vineyards Pinot Noir

Featured Audio
J Vineyards

Narsai David's review of J Vineyards 2008 Pinot Gris
and J Vineyards 2007 Pinot Noir
from the Russian River Valley

2008 Pinot Gris / Russian River Valley
Pale color, delicate aromas of peaches leading to a light wine with good high acidity. This would be fine with oysters. If you're interested in an aperitif, try this over ice with a splash of grenadine or cassis syrup. Very nice price $16.00.

2007 Pinot Noir / Russian River Valley
Light, pale red color. Delicate aromas of strawberries and roses. Here's a light bodied pinot noir made for food. Only a light hint of oak and a high acid backbone. A wine to serve with spicy food or rich seafood dishes. Virtually any seafood dish with a cream or butter sauce. $35.00
