Bubble Room Named 'Unique Tasting Room Experience' by 7x7 Magazine

Flip through Spencer Spellman's recent stories for 7x7 Magazine and it becomes immediately clear he's a lover of the unexpected. Whether he's venturing to the state's most unusual accommodations or detailing the quirky attractions of Northern California, Spencer consistently uncovers juicy novelties for a cosmopolitan congregation of Bay Area sophisticates.

Recently Spencer set himself the task of finding tasting room experiences that really stand out from the crowd, and we're tickled to report his top pick was The Bubble Room, our beautifully appointed full-service tasting salon here on the grounds of J Vineyards & Winery in Healdsburg, California. (Here's a 360 degree view of it.)

"Visitors get a much more personalized and tastier opportunity inside the Bubble Room," he writes of the three-course wine and peak season food pairing. "Give yourself a couple of hours for the tasting and consider a lunchtime visit, as the pairing serves as a light meal."

Reservations are recommended for the Bubble Room. You can make a reservation request online here or just call 707-431-5430.

In other bubble-related news, our Vintage Brut is now a finalist for Snooth's 2012 Peoples' Voice Wine Awards in the "Best Super Premium Sparkling Wine" category. Vote before October 22nd.

Finally, if you're going to be in Sonoma County this Saturday, September 22nd, there are still a few tickets available to our annual Harvest Party, one of the best seasonal events in the region. Get yours today!

Dan Berger's Wines of the Week: J Viognier & J Pinot Gris!

Volume XVI, Issue 6, March 22, 2012

Wines of the Week
2011 J Viognier, Alexander Valley, Hoot Owl Vineyard
Terrific floral/spicy, tropical fruit aroma, exactly what the variety offers; dry entry, but rich texture moderated by great acid.

2010 J Pinot Gris, Russian River Valley
This estate-grown wine has an aroma of mint/lime and tangerine; the taste is enhanced by lees contact for added texture. The flavors are lush and long.

Both available only at the tasting room and at jwine.com.

J Visitor Center

The topic arose the other day when I tasted two superb wines from J’s new winemaker Melissa Stackhouse that were consciously made so their textures would add to the character of the wine.
Melissa Stackhouse, J Winemaker

Both are in our Wine of the Week feature, and both have been made carefully so each has a slightly higher textural element that adds to the wines.
One is a Viognier, a wine that is usually rich and oily. To deal with some of this, Stackhouse made sure the texture was moderated with good fruit acid that leaves the wine with a brilliant “grapefruit pith” texture.
By contrast, a Pinot Gris offers more extract of fruit and “middle-of-the-grape” flavors from having been in contact with the lees, adding a bit of weight to the finish.
When evaluating wine, failing to “see” the texture as a part of the wine’s overall quality is a common failing among novices.
The two J wines are available only through the winery. There will be no retail visibility because of scant production.

"Here’s a really enjoyable, balanced wine" - KCBS Food and Wine Editor Narsai David for J Vineyards 2008 RRV Chardonnay!

KCBS Food and Wine Editor Narsai David reviewed wines from Sonoma

The 2008 J Vineyards Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley is delicious even before you taste it.

“The aromas have such a perfect balance between the fruit and oak. The oak is just the subtlest touch. On the palate, that finesse continues. Mouth watering balance of citrus and lots of fruit with just the right amount of acid. Here’s a really enjoyable, balanced wine.”

J VINEYARDS & WINERY WRAPS UP SPARKLING WINE HARVEST

J Vineyards & Winery Wraps Up Sparkling Wine Harvest

J Vineyards & Winery concluded its 2010 Russian River Valley sparkling wine harvest with a flourish this past Tuesday.

Pinot Noir grapes destined for Cuvée 20 and Brut Rosé were hand-picked in the early morning hours from “Nicole’s Vineyard,” the winery’s Russian River Valley estate located on Eastside Road. A load of Chardonnay from the “Ross Ranch Vineyard” near Sebastopol brought a close to what J Winemaker George Bursick is describing as “a very compressed harvest.”

Heavy coastal fog and low clouds have shrouded the region for most of the summer, pushing the annual grape harvest back about three to four weeks. Temperatures did warm up in early September helping to jumpstart the sluggish harvest. With the sparkling wine grapes safely fermenting in the winery, the varietal wine harvest throughout J’s ten Russian River Valley estate vineyards is expected to continue into early October.

“Though yields are down about 10%, tasting the Pinot Noir grapes now at the winery, we find them to be delicately balanced with luscious aromatics of raspberry and strawberry,” said Bursick. “This harvest appears to have similarities to the 1999 vintage, which was also a late harvest. The wines from 1999 were delicate and delicious.”

The winery, located on Old Redwood Highway south of Healdsburg, focuses on Brut and Brut Rosé sparkling wines, as well as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris varietal wines, produced from grapes farmed primarily within Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley appellation.

Founded by Judy Jordan in 1986, J Vineyards & Winery is an independently-owned Sonoma County winery. J will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary next year. To learn more, or to join the J Wine Club, please call (707) 431-3646, or go to www.jwine.com.

J VINEYARDS & WINERY DEBUTS TWO NEW CYCLING JERSEYS TO SUPPORT CANCER CURE EFFORTS

“Cycling is an important charitable fundraising tool in the fight against cancer,” said Founder and President, Judy Jordan. “When you combine this with the fact that Sonoma County has become an important global destination for cycling enthusiasts, it seemed only natural for us to be involved.”

One of J’s cycling jerseys has been designed to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which supports bike races and public cycling tours in California and across the country. The other, a bright pink jersey, benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, an organization that sponsors numerous national “bike rides for life” to raise funds for breast cancer research.

                  Lymphoma & Leukemia Cycling Jersey

This is the fourth year that J Vineyards & Winery has produced a cycling jersey for charitable purposes. Each features the winery’s distinctive brushstroke “J” logo, as well as the charitable organization’s logo.

The jerseys are made for cycling enthusiasts and are quite stylish, yet functional. Designed to evaporate moisture, the jerseys feature a mid-level collar, a 20” hidden zipper, and three spacious rear pockets.

The jerseys are available at the Winery’s Visitor Center, or online at www.jwine.com. They are $115 each, with 10% of the proceeds going to the respective organizations.

Founded in 1986 by Judy Jordan, J Vineyards & Winery is an independently owned producer of elegant Russian River Valley sparkling and estate varietal wines. The winery will celebrate its 25th harvest in 2011.

The J Winery and Visitor Center is just a quick bicycle ride south of downtown Healdsburg at 11447 Old Redwood Highway. For more information, please call (707) 431-3646, or go to www.jwine.com

Truly Exceptional Pinot Noir! - PinotFile for J Vineyards 2007 Barrel 16 Pinot Noir

2007 J Vineyards Barrel 16 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

16 special barrels chosen by the winemaker, George Bursick. 100% destemmed. Aged 12 months in 30% new French oak barrels and 3 additional months after blending.

Nicely composed array of aromas including red berries and cherries, sassafras and oak spices. Wow! Delicious berry melange nicely spiced with hints of mocha, sassafras and melon. Almost a spiced muffin flavor. A unique wine of modest intensity with a silky smooth texture, mild fine-grain tannins and admirable finesse. Decant if you pop the cork now.

A special occasion Pinot Noir.
